Browse our list of the pub chains in the UK, from the largest PubCo’s to smaller, 3 pub chains.
A pub chain is a group of pubs or bars owned or managed by one company or brand.
In other industries, this could be considered a ‘pub franchise’, but British pubs are special places and have their own individual names and identities based on local history or folklore. However, when managed by a pub chain, they will likely have similar menus and drinks to other managed pubs.
Pubs can be ‘chain’ /’ tied houses’, this means they can only sell products which the pub chain owner allows. This is common with pub brewery owners, who produce their own beer. If a pub is a ‘Free Houses’, it can usually sell what drinks it wants.
The brand owner, often called a pubco, may be one company, or there may be a group of companies and, the chain, itself, may be a division within a larger company, or a single operation.
Examples include Chef & Brewer, Wetherspoons, Walkabout, Taylor Walker Pubs and All Bar One. Pubs in the chain are typically branded with the same name, however the former “Firkin” pubs tended to be variations on a theme including the word Firkin in the title.
