What is Pub Accommodation?

Pub accommodation are rooms you can rent for short stays, which are located above or beside a pub, inn or tavern.

This is a unique guest experience as pub’s are often smaller, family-run establishments, your stays may feel more personal and less formal (like a bed & breakfast).

Another unique aspect of pubs, (unlike hotels) is that they’re open to the public; therefore at any time you can pop downstairs and enjoy a warm social atmosphere with the opportunity to meet locals.

For hundreds of years, Britain’s pubs, inns and taverns have offered travellers a warm place to stay, eat and socialise. It’s one of the oldest forms of hospitality in the world!

Why Stay in a Pub in the UK?

Pub stays offer you a cosy, authentic experience, with characterful accommodation, food, drink, and a feeling of local community.

For these reasons, pub stays are becoming increasingly popular for travellers exploring the UK. Other reasons for their growing popularity include:

Historic charm and character

  • Many pubs with rooms are former coaching inns, farmhouses, or buildings that have welcomed travellers for generations. The oldest have beautiful, characterful features such as exposed beams, Inglenook fireplaces, and local artefacts.
  • The character is steeped in history and personality, which just can’t be manufactured by a traditional hotel.

Better range of food and drink than other accommodations

  • As pubs are often serving the public, they offer pub classics and Sunday lunches, which appeal to a wide range of patrons.
  • The food here is more informal than in a hotel restaurant. ‘Gastro pubs’ offer the restaurant dining experience and more tailored menus.

Going upstairs at the end of the evening rather than calling a taxi

  • This is particularly convenient if you’re tired from travelling or exploring and don’t want to venture too far from your accommodation for food and entertainment. Its really convenient to just walk downstairs and find a warm and cosy bar to sit in a snug corner and have some good food.

Friendly, welcoming atmosphere

  • Pubs are the heart of the local community, and when staying there, you’re likely to see locals who are happy to offer tips on the best places to visit and things to do in the area. This can be particularly helpful if you’re new to the area or looking to explore beyond the usual tourist spots.
  • Often pubs host events such as live bands, quizzes or karaoke, which you can participate in too.

Dog-friendly accommodation

  • As pub rooms are more informal, they often are more flexible for dog visitors.
  • Pubs are often the centre of communities and perfectly placed at the end of a walking route, where muddy paws are more welcome.

More affordable rates than traditional hotels

  • Staying in a pub can be especially appealing to budget-friendly travellers who still want to enjoy a comfortable and convenient stay.
  • It is often cheaper to book your stay directly on the pub’s website to avoid paying 20% extra on booking website fees.

What to bear in mind when booking a pub stay

As with everything travel-related, location is key. Some pubs with rooms are in town centres, while others are in rural spots that may be a little further from trains.

If you’re planning to stay in a countryside inn, you may need your own car or to factor in a taxi from the nearest station, as some pubs can be hard to get to with public transport.

Booking directly through a pub’s own website is often cheaper than using third-party booking platforms, which typically add high commission fees. Whenever possible, check the pub’s site first, you may find exclusive rates or added perks.

If the pub is part of a larger PubCo or chain, it’s also worth exploring their loyalty schemes. Many offer discounts, points, or special deals that can make your stay even better value.

A number of pubs with rooms are located in historic, Grade II listed buildings. While these properties are full of charm and character, they may not always offer accessible ground-floor rooms or modern facilities. They may also feature wonky floors, winding corridors or rooms with steep stairs. If accessibility is important, be sure to check in advance before booking.

Finally, consider booking ahead. Many of the very best pubs are popular with locals so, if the pub has the option, make sure you pre-book your dinner reservations. The fact that you are staying with them doesn’t guarantee you a reservation. There’s nothing more frustrating than looking forward to dinner in a lovely pub and then finding out they’re fully booked. This also applies to pub quizzes or special events.

It would also be a good idea to check online to see if there are any major Football or Rugby matches scheduled, as if your pub shows these (or you don’t want to miss them), you can anticipate it being busier than usual.
